FROM CHAPTER THREE:"WHAT MAKES YOU TICK?"

(Note: this excerpt is taken from someone's personalized ebook. The content of your book would be personalized from your own responses to the FPYC questionnaire which you can begin at the top of this page.)

"...Why is it important to know your temperament type?

The last thing you want - in the demanding work environments of the knowledge age - is to be stuck in a role that is not suited to your temperament.

It’s like using a tool for something that it’s not designed for. Have you ever tried to use a knife when you couldn’t find a screwdriver?

Firstly, it doesn’t do a very good job, and secondly it ends up ruining the knife.

People are similar. When they do what they are not designed to do, they don’t perform very well and eventually they break.

For example, someone who likes to work by themselves, and to a schedule, will find it very stressful working with others in a disorganized environment.

That’s why an understanding or your temperment type is another crucial pre-requisite to understanding your Authentic Direction.

KEY ASPECTS OF THE ISTS TEMPERAMENT

Potential strengths:sincere, traditional, loyal, reserved, hard working, sensible, organized, decisive, thorough.

Potential limitations: can be inflexible and finds change daunting. Would benefit from reflecting on the underlying meanings and the 'big picture'.

What does the fact that you are an “ISTS” mean for your career?

You tend to be a reflective and thoughtful person, rather than wanting highly charged activity with others, or high power events and activities. It is important for you to try and understand situations before charging into things.

Your preference is for social interaction on a small scale: one on one or small groups.

You prefer work that is practical or technical in nature that depends upon using skills that you have built up as a result of your practical experience.

You also prefer work that involves real products and services rather than work dealing with theories or ideas.

You like to work in a thoughtful and logical way, preferably using standard procedures.

You are motivated by tangible results and you respect exacting standards and operating procedures.

You are most comfortable when your work is carried out in an environment where practical judgment and judgment and experience are valued and rewarded, and where you are provided with the necessary resources to carry out your work.

You can be uncomfortable and impatient with non-practical matters and regard them as a waste of time. Innovation and rapid and unexpected change are foreign to your
temperament, but you are good at identifying problems associated with the new and innovative.

Many innovators often overlook the problems that naturally occur to you.

You are then able to use your practical approach to solving those problems. However you should beware of raising these problems in a way that might seem obstructive.

This is a sure way to the road to redundancy. If used positively this aspect of your temperament can be a great advantage.

The strongest feature of your temperament is your practical approach to dealing with your work and the desire to do so in an objective, logical and systematic way.

You are able to work on your own, but you prefer a structured and orderly work environment.

You can cope well with complexity and work painstakingly with detail. Your potential to deal with detail and complexity and to do so in an objective, logical and systematic way is the central feature of your temperament.

You are likely to experience tensions until decisions are made.

This can sometimes be difficult if you need to absorb complex detail. You should avoid making decisions too quickly until you have a firm grasp of all the details.

You can sometimes overlook the effect that your decisions have on other people. Learning to develop an appreciation of the contribution of others can help in this regard."
