FROM CHAPTER TWO: "HOW ARE YOU SMART?":

"...What is it about you, that makes you good at what you do? Think of a time in your working life when you were really in your element and felt in complete control of the situation.

Were you “in control” because you communicated well, or was it your ability with numbers and computers? Did you show great hand-eye coordination or were you exceptionally creative? Whatever it was, it probably drew on your natural abilities or gifts.

Having a clear understanding of your talents is a vitally important pre-requisite to finding your Authentic Direction. When you live your life in tune with your Authentic Direction, you do work that - because you are good at it - allows you to make a real contribution. Through this comes a real sense of enjoyment and accomplishment.

In this book we have built on the work of Harvard University psychologist and recognized world authority Dr Howard Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences. Gardner rejects the idea that there is a single entity called “intelligence”. Traditional measures of intelligence focus too narrowly on logical reasoning and the ability to manipulate words and numbers.

Gardner’s original theory identified seven separate intelligences, to which he has since added an eighth. Bearing Gardner’s theory in mind, the right question to ask in identifying your talents is not “How smart are you?“ but: “How are you smart?”

When Tiger Woods smacks the ball 300 yards down the fairway, or when Celine Dion hits another piercing high note, we don’t usually think of either individual as being intelligent.

According to Dr Gardner, however, Woods has an abundance of bodily kinesthetic intelligence and Dion is endowed with musical intelligence.

The eight intelligences identified by Gardner are:
1. Linguistic;
2. Logical mathematical;
3. Visual spatial;
4. Bodily kinesthetic;
5. Naturalist;
6. Musical;
7. Interpersonal;
8. Intrapersonal.

Gardner’s theories are especially useful when considering your own strengths and weaknesses. Because they cover the full range of human performance you get a much more rounded picture of the capabilities that you offer an employer than a traditional intelligence test.

To enable you to get an even more precise idea of exactly where your strong points and limitations lie, we have broken Gardner’s eight categories down into 20 separate “abilities”. This chapter features the FPYC Intelligence and Ability Analysis, which gives you an assessment of your confidence in each of the eight intelligences and 20 abilities. This, in turn, provides many clues and insights into the discovery of your Authentic Direction. The 20 abilities, and how they relate to Gardner’s eight intelligence categories, are shown in the table on the next page."
