FROM CHAPTER ONE: 'LIVING YOUR LIFE 'ON PURPOSE'"
"...Your Ideal Career
Your Life's Purpose is not necessarily your career, but rather your life's central work. It is something you find intrinsically rewarding. You may have the opportunity to professionalize and earn money from this activity, in which case your Life's Purpose and Ideal Career will be one and the same thing.
Alternatively, your Ideal Career may not directly involve pursuing the activities of your Life's Purpose, but rather support your Life's Purpose.
Either way, the first thing is to articulate your Life's Purpose and then find an Ideal Career that is consistent with it. Uncovering your Ideal Career is part of the process outlined in the final chapter and is the second aspect of your Authentic Direction Statement.
To help you on your way towards discovering your Ideal Career we introduce you to the 30 careers - drawn from the 1200 defined in the official US Department of Labor O*Net database - that best match your profile from the FPYC questionnaire.
This is called your WorkMatch and is outlined for you in chapter four. Your dominant abilities, identified in chapter two, are used to select your five most suitable "Fields of Work" from the 26 in the O*Net database.
Then, based on your temperament which is the subject of chapter three, the top six occupations in each of your five Fields of Work are selected.
Will any of these 30 options be your Ideal Career? Maybe, maybe not. That's not the point. What is important is that it provides you with vital food for thought.
Just like the discussion of your abilities in chapter two and temperament in chapter three, your 30 WorkMatches in chapter four provide the essential raw materials for the process that we guide you through in chapter five.
A full discussion of your talents is the purpose of chapter two. Your eight intelligences and 20 abilities are discussed, and we help you explore your individual gifts and talents.
Richard Leider is a renowned career coach who has written extensively on how to discover your Life's Purpose. He has this to say about abilities:
"(Everyone) hungers to know and express their gifts and talents. The people I have met in my 30 years as a career counselor are always absolutely sure they have some unique talent. They may not know what it is yet. But they know that they have something within them that they need to contribute. And this feeling lasts throughout your lifetime."
From this you can see that a clear vision of your talents and abilities is a vital prerequisite for detecting your Authentic Direction. You will already be aware at some level of your talents, but by bringing these into conscious focus you will be able to send the right messages to your subconscious, allowing you to gain valuable insights into your Life's Purpose."
